If the Earth is (apparently) dead and these people can't grow any vegetables what do they eat? How do the guys get so damn muscular? Imagine how much raw protein is needed to fuel those gigantic arms. Raoh even has a horse but what does it eat? And how did that fat fuck that Jagi sends to take out Ken get so damn huge? How does a wasteland sustain a guy with so much human whale blubber? I don't get why Raoh is so obsessed with being a conqueror either. Its not like there's anything worth conquering (except Yuria and maybe Bat and Lin if your a shameless pevert, hey I don't judge and even the Bible sanctions incest in uhh extreme circumstances). Raoh is just an emperor of wasteland, dirty radioactive dust bowl where nothing grows. What's the point? Sure, there are crowds of people, no idea how the population is that large though, but look at them.

I've only seen the 1986 film which was pretty cheesy and bad in a fun way. Is the series and manga worth it or should I just skip?

>what do they eat?
They're still able grow food, as shown in the first episode of the series.

Haven't read the manga but if you enjoyed the movie then the series is well worth a watch, especially after the Shin saga is over.

Because it's cool, anon. I don't know if there's actual explanations to any of those questions, but I assume most people let them slide to focus on and enjoy the display of struggle, righteousness, and plain badassery. That's what I do, anyway. The apocalypse is just set-dressing to make life harder.
As for the other media, they're both good, but the manga has the quicker pacing. The anime would probably be a slog if you watch it for the "so bad its good" factor. Hell, I like it and I've still never finished it.
