The earliest digital anime were pretty rough, and they had a host of problems including:
>weak colors
>lack of contrast
>often a grey haze over everything.

I consider it a bit of a digital dark ages for anime and it took them years to fix these underlying issues.

Here is a fan edit attempt at correcting this. Stronger colors, contrast, and a CRT effect (film grain replacement).

Could fans produce entire fan edits of series to fix these issues?

Similar.

I tried color correcting some clips from the Umineko anime a while back. It has the same washed out look as most shows from that time but this one was especially bad.

Doing this for a whole series wouldn't be that hard, just tedious if you want to do it right (i.e. color correcting each scene individually.)

i think gamma is too harsh in the edit.

This thread is pretty interesting, I’ve seen a lot of attempts at trying to recreate the warmer analog look of cel anime. I think the best one officially is Gundam UC Engage where they try and match the style and aesthetic of specific shows.

Just mess around with color settings in a video editor

Is the new Reze movie actually good? The movie is airing during one of my work days so I wonder if it’s worth calling off so I can watch it with the wife

wrong thread for that buddy

It’s mainly done with video editing software where the colour balancing, levels and contrast is adjusted. Think of the colour correction edits done by Dragon Ball fans to fix the DVD releases like Seed Of Might.

How did traditional anime have stronger colors and better contrast than digital anime?

In theory, you can pick any color and adjust the contrast however you please in digital.

Does it have something with do with our TVs?

Yeah, LCD became the dominant display format, and they have terrible contrast outside of bright scenes. Anime became generally duller and low contrast to compensate. Theatrical digital anime still really pops and has good contrast like older anime. Scenes like these are impossible to display on a typical LCD.

What's the best display format then?

CRTs?

Generally OLED or a good mini LED. OLED will have better viewing angles, better motion resolution, and typically less blooming, but top end mini LEDs are roughly on par with the best OLEDs in terms of contrast while getting brighter. The Sony Bravia 9 for example.

>CRTs?

CRTs are incredibly overrated and inflexible when it comes to video. The best HD ones top out 1080i and can be picky with signals. Only PC CRT monitors don't have these issues, but the largest ones are only around 20 inches, and they got prohibitively expensive a long time ago. Most hover around 100-120 nits. Even the best monitors like Sony artisans roughly have a gamut as wide as Rec.709, but with primaries shifted away from red. So, even the best CRTs can't display red as intended. They do have by far the best motion resolution though. You will barely see stutter on a CRT with a proper refresh rate. Their ability to display lower resolutions can also make bad SD anime transfers look a lot better. And, I have to admit that they do have a unique look. Something about phosphors is pleasant, but if you want phosphors you'd be better off hunting down a good Plasma. Something like a late gen Pioneer Kuro or a late Panasonic Plasma. You still get the benefits of phosphors and far superior motion with the benefits of a more modern display.

That looks bad. His skin looks very yellow.

its not so bad

And what was the point of CRT filter?

Couldn't you do something like this with shaders or do you really have to fuck with the video?
