Is this still the most soul crushing ending scene in anime? It is for me at least.

When I first saw the ending of Texhnolyze (around 2005ish, I was still a young teenager), while the scene with Ran was unfolding I unconsciously dug my fingers into the skin of my other arm and drew blood. I was making the same facial expression of confusing and rage that Ichise was making and I started sweating and crying intensely. Then the scene that immediately followed afterwards with the insert song and I fucking bawled like a bitch.
I threw up later that evening too.

Not a single other anime or any other piece of media gave me such a visceral reaction, jesus christ. I haven't watched Texhnolyze since then and I don't want to watch it again.

>>682
Yeah I remember feeling this heavy hole that slowly drained everything. By then she really was the only part of that show left to hope for and when that was gone and the ending came I just felt empty. Powerful stuff, but it really gets the message of not putting your existence behind impermanent things across to the viewer.

Jinrou comes to mind for me ;_;

yeah this moment cemented Zeta gundam as one of my favourite anime.
listening to this is melancholic

The problem with the endings mentioned here is that they all go rather abstract. Wolf's Rain has a sad last episode, but the last scene is that kind of open for interpretation, same thing with Zeta Gundam, at first it's "oh no", but then "wait, what?", and you only find out what happened in ZZ, and then there is Texhnolyze where you are made unsure about about what, or if anything, even happened, and I think the immediate intellectual demand breaks the emotional impact.

Now, this one had me upset for days.

What's the single most obscure anime you know of /cel/?

Maybe Kyubi no Kitsune to Tobimaru, a 1968 film that has no home video release and gets sporadic screenings in Japan. There are some lost 60s TV anime as well covered here.

https://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/lost-tv-anime/

>>2586

Never seen anybody mention Madura before.

Excluding crowdfunded independent animation that haven't been sold outside of limited releases in Japan, I guess some 40s-era shorts by Masaoka and Ofuji that never got digital transfers and only have low-res thumbnails on the Internet, not particularly obscure in terms of not being catalogued but I don't know anyone who's seen them.

>>2681

Do you have any examples of the crowdfunded stuff? That sounds really interesting.

>>2641
Thank you for the discovery, anon, I genuinely needed to see this.

This may sound like a weird question to some but is there anywhere or anyone that collects, catalogs or is knowledgeable with regards to anime vhs, specifically the covers?
Sorta in the realm of the laserdisc database that catalogs them, or just in general.

Here is a rental only, a sale only, and one that allows both.

>>2732

Here is what im told is a rental, i dont see it on there though.

>>2733
To the right of the 9200 yen marker is "rental" - you can tell by these >>2732 the rental only has it beside its price.

>>2734
That means "without taxes", you can see some of the other tapes list the price both without and without them. From what I gather from the written text in >>2733, it's saying that both sale and rental are allowed, but only within domestic use.

>>2735
>>2734

Thanks for your input.
I get the feeling 20 years ago i wouldve said or known rentals sometimes had alternate covers and cassette images but its been atleast that long since i had to even think about that.
I couldnt find anything trying to look up the catalog numbers, with laserdiscs people already went thru all the trouble of figuring that out for others looking for more info.

There was one guy on nyaa a few years back who made two lists of 10 movies and OVAs from the 80s as sort of a "starter pack" for retro anime.
https://nyaa.si/view/1289794
https://nyaa.si/view/1267525
I've been wondering what a similar list would look like for other decades, specifically the 90's and 2000s. For the nineties I was thinking
>Cyber City Odeo 808 (90)
>Roujin Z (91)
>Shōjo Tsubaki (92)
>Porco Rosso (92)
>Ninja Scroll (93)
>Street Fighter (94)
>Memories (95)
>Perfect Blue (97)
>Ghost in the Shell (97)
>Princess Monoke (97)
>End of Evangelion (97)
>Tekken (98)
>Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (99)
There would be 20 entries in total, ideally with at least one from each year.

I really enjoyed cyber city oedo, I'm glad to see it mentioned. For your consideration as well:

Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie (99)
Angel Cop (89 - 94)
Gunsmith Cats (95)

One of my suggestions is an extension of a TV show, another starts in the decade prior.. but this thread made me realize almost all of my favorites start in the 80s or the early 2000s!

>>2531
I will also second lodoss, there isnt a lot of quality fantasy nowadays. Its all "I'm stuck in a video game but I'm actually a god/refrigerator!?" and everything works like a video game. Even including western media and live action, fantasy as a genre doesn't seem to get much of significant quality. Most of the material in the genre that I enjoyed was written, either as a novel or as a manga. Scifi and cyberpunk stuff gets all the love, it seems.

I would suggest adding Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki OVA 1 and 2 for '92 and '94 respectively.

I'm not sure if it's good to have two Ghibli movies on the list, Mononoke would be enough. If there were to be a second one, I'd at least go with Omoide Poroporo, a non-Miyazaki one. And if there will be two Oshii, Patlabor 2 might be more relevant than Jin-Roh. Also for movies that are dependent on series, like Evangelion and Sakura, I don't think they fit on the idea, since you'd have to watch the series before. I'm also unsure about the reach and relevance of some of the entries, such as Tekken, Shojo Tsubaki and Roujin Z (even more so considering Memories is already there). Here are some of my suggestions of OVAs that havern't been mentioned yet:

Otaku no Video (91)
Burn Up (91)
Video Girl Ai (92)
Aa! Megami-Sama! (93)
Taiho Shichau zo (94)
El-Hazard (95)
Gundam Dai 08 MS Shoutai (96)
Rurouni Kenshin (99)
Sakura Taisen (99)

>>2531
I think a "starter pack" isn't supposed to be obscure, it's a list of the most basic and influential, that might give a taste of what was being done at the time and serve as foundation for people to go look after what they might be interested.

>>2345

I just noticed you have 4 suggestions from 1997 but none from 1996.
Sonic movie and Black Jack movie both came out that year.
Might want to round out that list a bit.

>>2722
I mistook the Sakura Taisen OVAs here, the one I think is worth a consideration is the first one, Ōka Kenran, from 1997. Others that might also fit are the X/1999 movie and the Tetsuwan Birdy OVA, both from 1996.

Are we really supposed to believe that hardened soldiers are going to defy their superior officers, whom they've been conditioned to fear all their lives, to defect to an enemy they've been conditioned to hate all their lives, just for the sake of some shitty pop songs? That would be like the Norks or Talibans defecting to the United States in mass because of Taylor Swift. And why would anyone in that situation even give a shit about gay idol drama anyway? They're supposed to be fighting for their lives, stranded in the outer solar system millions of the nearest supply base, and yet they have not only the available resources but also the audience for this garbage?

Or that the chief archivist whose supposedly spent his entire life studying combat footage, wouldn't notice that a goddamn martial arts movie was clearly faked? Actually zentradi in general seem pretty dim, the infiltration team is able to speak perfect Japanese with no effort, but somehow remain clueless about every other aspect of Terran culture. They really should have been caught right away, especially since they acted like total buffoons and Hayase actually saw them in the miclone chambers.

The way they handle romance was also pretty dumb. At most civilian workplaces its frowned upon for officers to engage in relationships, let alone in the military. And then there's the whole romance between Max and Milia. "I tried to kill you an hour ago, let's get married!"Yeah, right.

How is this garbage considered a classic in any way? My eight year old sister could come up with a better mecha show.

wtf does this even mean? sounds like your lack of interaction with real human beings has caused .you some sort of brain damage, sad

>>1090
Well in Gundam it's because most Newtypes are kids and therefore bratty shits, but at the same time they are all the superiors can rely on, so they can't really just expel newtypes for being shits.

The Misa Romance (before the terrible coda episodes) is the second best thing SDF Macross has going for it.
Nothing too contrived. Nice and naturalistic. A counterpoint to some of the idolshit you're crying about. Maturity is wanting to fuck your coworkers, not you idol.

But the best thing OG Macross has is Sleggar done right.

>>1085
UC Gundam will always be the better series

I once watched an Anthony Bourdain show where he visited I believe Libya during civil unrest and after the deposition of Qaddafi, one guy talking to Bourdain held a piece of fast food-style fried chicken and said something like "THIS IS WHAT I FOUGHT FOR!". So maybe.

if reinhard is supposedly hitler, then would that make oberstien like von blomberg or himmler? Because I see him as more of a dirlewanger type figure. Also use this thread to talk about the '88 ova, because I need to catch up on that shit

I'm basically inserting the characters into WWII officials but your analogy makes way more sense lol would rubinsky be herzl?

>>1104
Echoing this. Reinhard is space Napoleon and the Reich is the Old Regime.
Reinhard / Kircheis are also a classic Alexander / Hephaestion dynamic.

>>1106
Correct.
You can even pull the Alexander comparison further with how he mysteriously dies at a young age shortly after consolidating his empire, and his admirals mirroring the Diadochi (though Reinhard at least managed to get an heir so I can only assume it didn't all fall apart after the conclusion).

the way I see it, rudolf and reinhard represent both sides of idealist figures like hitler held. One side is textbook socialist or dictatorship that leans towards ideologies that fall under that term like fascism and use brute means like state-enforced eugenic policies that're egoist-like and come off as masquerading ethno-nationalism while the other is more amenable and meritocratic as opposed to fully nepotistic and such. The other side still has pride for it's nation but less hyper-traditionalist and more through a genuine altruistic love for it's countrymen even if policies or decisions are still expedient in some occasions (westerland massacre lol). Sort of the same contrast between wen-li's minarchist views juxtaposed with the bourgeoisie vs proletariat-oriented side of democracy. It's like a thematic hitler-like aristocracy vs a fdr-like democrstic-republic but yeah reinhard is clearly bonapartist. There are instances where he's pushed into coming off as a braunschweig-like machiavellianistic narcissist (too exaggerated I know) like vermillion and the reuenthal rebellion.

>>1103
Reinhard's explicitly meant to be more like Alexander and Napoleon. They take some of the cool things from Fascism but then put it into an explicitly non-Fascist context, a monarchist empire in the style of 19th century Prussia, and have Reinhard be against the Hitler figure, to make them acceptable to modern people.

Sup /cel/ let's have a nice little thread for hentai discussion. What are the pre-2000s classics? What are the must see staples? What have you watched recently?

Golden Boy is the perfect perv anime

Cream Lemon is a must watch

I wonder whats really in the black bible. I've only seen the original OVA but I just started playing the original eroge and you get some insight into it but its like this strange remix of Christianity where Jesus uses magic and you can recite the lord's prayer to unleash sex spells on unsuspecting girls. Its funny because from what I've read that prayer is specifically used to ward off evil and protect against black magic. It makes me wonder about the sect that created this grimoire and what else might be in there or what their beliefs were. Maybe they weren't witches and are some kind of unorthodox Christian gnostic occult sect? I'll have to watch Origins sometime.

I wonder if there is a fan made version of the book out there that you can actually read? I might make a fake prop version of it for a craft project when I get the time but it looks kinda generic tbh

What's your absolute favourite /ar/ anime, and why?

For me, it's Irresponsible Captain Tylor. I remember watching the first episode back in 2017 and finding it to be somewhat uneventful, and it wasn't until the fourth episode where the crescendo made me laugh for a solid ten seconds that I fell in love with it.

I found the anime to be incredibly hilarious and it had that charm of not knowing how the characters were going to get out of an impossible situation and then seeing them get out of it flawlessly. I do think it suffers from a few slow moments, some out of character moments for Tylor and a very lackluster, confusing final fight. I wanted to see Tylor and the crew get out of impossible battle situations and he's only in four in the entire anime, I get not wanting to make an anime that's all about winning impossible situations but I just wish there was more.

The crew are fantastic as well, great characters all round. The Mad Max style soldiers who are so stupidly dressed for their jobs, the android spy sent to kill Tylor who everyone falls in love with and even Yamamoto and Yuriko who are pretty normal by comparison are still great for being straight men to Tylor's idiotic ideas and escapades. As for the enemy alien army, there aren't that many but I did find the two main ones Azalyn and Dom to be pretty fun, although I did find Azalyn's obsession over Tylor a bit of a meh plot point since it doesn't really go anywhere.

This was probably the first anime where I saw my favourite trope of "underestimated lucky idiot" being put into full effect and I noticed that I LOVE that kind of trope. I saw it a few times in things like Ace Attorney and Index, but never pieced it together until this show. Worst part is, I've never seen another anime really do it again, although Golden Boy was close.

Surprisingly, I've never seen the OVA's despite this being my favourite anime. For some reason I just never had the drive to do it despite having no reason not to. I'll have to figure out a good time to watch them. I also kind of want to read the entire Japanese wikipedia page for Tylor since it seems to have the ENTIRE light novel up there but only in Japanese which I learnt from a quick google translate skim has Tylor be a 30 year old pedophile who is also sent back in time to WW2 to command the Yamato in one of the novels which sounds hilarPost too long. I just watched this and I'm confused, what are the arguments for Maroko being an actual time traveler vs just a scam artist?

>>621
Lupin part 1. It's the one episodic anime besides kino no tabi I keep coming back to, every episode is good and it has an atmosphere that no other series can reproduce
>>622
LOGH is excellent, you can feel the author's love of history throughout the whole show.

>>2642
Lupin Part 1 is so good, that episode is one of my favourites. I thought it was cool it was referenced in Eizoken as well.

>>621
Cyber City Oedo 808. Its peak aesthetic, and its got a sort of charm that other cyberpunk stuff doesnt have (though it doesnt like as sleek as stuff like GitS or Akira).

Lum is used goods
