Not sure if it needs a thread but it's not like we're overflowing with discussion here ;), still I recently started watching the original HxH anime from 1999. I have never actually watched/read any of HxH and all I know of it was that it's permanently on hiatus, that cat girl (or boy?) that everyone posts a lot and the designs of the MC's. I decided to give it a shot for no real reason and so far I've been enjoying it.

I've watched YYH last year and enjoyed that as well. I found Season 1 of YYH to be good, 2 to be great the first half of 3 to be fantastic and then it kinda falls off after Sensui is introduced which was a shame, but it's nice to know that Togashi hasn't lost it with HxH.

I will say the first couple of episodes were...fine, I'm still not entirely sure what the plot is. Sure, Gon is trying to find his father and that's the goal but the whole idea of Hunters just seem odd. The fact Gon and that other hunter in the first episode were seen hunting animals and Gon wants to become a hunter kind of makes you think Hunter's are animal hunters, but then they add several characters who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing. I guess it's more like a catchall term for someone who is exceptional and reliable in everything and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.

Character wise, I enjoy them a lot. What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show and everyone else to sort of be secondary characters who don't really interact with one another since it's about Gon and his story, but it's actually pretty cool to see Leorio and Kurapika be together a lot and see their histories and helping each other out and such. I also like how Gon and Killua have a really normal friendship. They basically act like kids their age would act if they were friends. Which is very surprising since I thought Killua would be very stoic and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him. Hell their dynamic feels like the other way around. Killua should be the MC and Gon is the friend who helps him out of his shell, but it's not like that at all.

I'm currently on episode 27 and the final part of the Hunter exam. I found the first section (running) to be a bit lacklusterPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Shameless shilling is shameless, but I have been operating an episode-by-episode 1999 Hunter x Hunter for a few months. Essentially I just slowly talk about each episode, what they do differently, and how they might contribute to 1999's overall alternative take on the material.
https://kurorosanime.tumblr.com/ (not a webmaster so blogposting is easier to do here)

I've made a few interesting discoveries while doing this- primarily in contrasting how Gon and Killua get characterized here in comparison to the manga, but also getting way more information on the alt ending that even more dedicated Japanese fans didn't know (entirely thanks to making a thread about it at the right time on 4/a/).

Interesting.

Based. Will read later.

Nen is complicated to understand in both versions. But at least in 1999 you don't see a bunch of badly made censorship. Although the main reason why 1999's better is just the great amount of love put into every episode. Is a great ride from start to finish.

Its been years since I watched HxH 99. I've been meaning to do a rewatch one of these days since its a genuinely good show, adaptation, and directed by the great Kazuhiro Furuhashi.

Gonna reply to the points I find interesting so bear with me lol.
>who don't really fit that niche at all which makes the term "Hunter" kind of confusing
That is part of what maks HxH great. The title of "hunter" can mean anything and so allows Togashi to explore a variety of genres and settings. Hunters aren't constraint by expectations like other archetypes are like pirates or ninjas.
>and thus the guy you go to for troubles, like an official bounty hunter or mercenary.
That is one of many types of Hunters, yeah. In fact, I believe Togashi was partially inspired by the video game series Arc the Lad when it came to the conception of the manga since ideas and characters like Hunters, mode of transport and even Gon's father all look lifted straight out of Arc the Lad.
>What surprises me the most about this show was that I expected Gon to be the main part of the whole show
Yep, that is another great quality of HxH. The world isn't centered around the protagonist. Characters can and will interact heavily with each other and have a significant influence on the plot with or without Gon. He is only one kid after all. I also view Gon more like vehicle to see the world and characters from his perspective since I often find the seconary characters to be more interesting and better written. Not that its a bad thing, Gon is a very good shonen protagonist all things considered.
>and not want to be friends with Gon but he opened up pretty damn quickly to him.
The 1999 show actually somewhat changes their interaction. In the manga, it was Killua who introduces himself to Gon and seeks friendship since that is whole character early on, wanting to bond with others. Meanehile 1999 changes it to having Gon introducing himself to Killua. Its not really "bad" but I do prefer how the manga does it since lets Killua be more proactive.
>The fourth section (battleship) was also REALLY good,
Its basically an anime exclusive filler arc but a damn good one, especially since it gives the later phase more tension.

How systematic is the attempt to backup LD with domesday techniques? Is it sporatic or an attempt to do all of them? I hear that a lot of live action film have unique audio mixes and commentary tracks which may be lost forever. The oldest LD are literally starting to fall apart due to disc rot.

No one's done Wizardry OVA.

Thread dedicated to the great Osamu Dezaki.

Starting his career notably as an animator for Astro Boy, Dezaki made his claim after directing the Ashita no Joe anime. In it he defined much of what would become his signature style, which he would continue to develop throughout his future works. Many aspects of his style became defining tropes of anime. For example, his famous freeze frame technique, known as a postcard memory (pics related) has become a staple of anime. If you want more examples of tropes he started I recommend watching Ashita no Joe.

IPs he has directed include: Golgo 13, Black Jack, Space Cobra, Lupin III, Aim for the Ace, Moomin, The Roses of Versailles, and more. Without Dezaki the golden age of anime, that this board relates to, would not have existed as it did.

Oh, I see. That makes it simple then.
I really digged the artstyle

Just finished Black Jack fucking amazing. To be honest I will always pegged Dezaki as a hack fraud (maybe too strong a word) who we pretend it was good despite some very obvious amateurish qualities to his work. For example the sound design where he would just play the main theme at random intervals in the episode and it gets really annoying after a while, or the awkward dramatic timings with an episode having multiple climaxes and awkawrd cuts and scenes not flowing together well.
I tolerated it in Joe because of the source material and Cobra is light hearted fun, but it was hard to stomach on shows that tried to be serious.

But I am glad to report that there's none of that in Black Jack, this is Dezaki perfected, everything at the utmost professional standard, excellent drama with a great sense of pacing and every scene plays together well, all accompanied by some of the best art you'll see in anime. Highly recommend for all Dezaki fans

I figure this is a decent thread for this. I finished Joe 2 the other day, and I've been thinking about it a bit. What do you think of the ending? At first I was a bit disappointed, but after thinking about it, it's probably the best possible ending.

It's the only way it could've ended for me.

Hey hey hey blues....

Was hoping to see Joe find completion, but honestly I think it was the only completion a character like him could get. It's kind of sad I think after Rikishi's death he was suicidal and remained that way.

ITT we talk about old manga we read.

Bar Lemon Heart (1985)
A series about a nameless bartender, two of his regulars, the mild manner Matsu-chan and mysterious Megane-san, and whatever stragglers happen to walk into the titular Lemon Heart Bar. The stories are episodic, taking the form light hearted evening drinking conversations which almost always revolve around discussing alcohols, usually presented from a 'fly on the wall' perspective. The art style is simple and clean, with the exception of beverage bottles which are rendered in detail, and the characters are drawn in a style that's not to common these days. Each story is episodic and has a relaxing, slow pace, giving the whole manga a lazy feel. Here, drinking is a relaxed, social activity which involves discussing your day and savoring fine flavors, a break from the breakneck speed of the city. The bar itself seems like an insular place with its own rules and mannerisms, the slow and quiet mood being a welcome break from the world outside. Sadly, the bar lacks a distinct visual identity, probably because the backgrounds are generally very minimal. I only read the first volume, the rest remains untranslated. Bar Lemon Heart had a long run and remains incomplete. It was cancelled in 2021 when Furuya sensei passed. The manga did get a live action TV adaption and a bunch of 2 hour specials, the last being released in 2020, which I haven't watched.

the 1990s anime is very BLAH,but the 1988 is very good and dark,i loved it
my favorite episodes are the 2nd and the 4th
someone watched this anime too?

The 90s anime is great. The OVA is great too.
Miyu is an underrated (creepy)cutie.

>>3150
I love both, though the OVA is my favorite, the way episode 2 plays on Miyu's difficulties with her destiny and her human emotions is really well done. The storyboarding and drawing quality is immaculate in all four episodes, and I love how it keeps Miyu mysterious but endearing at the same time.

Miyu has a message for you all.

Thoughts on new cutie honey?

My favorite of all cutie honeys

>>663
The best one.

>>663
I'm on a big Nagai kick, so maybe I will re-watch it. I enjoyed it the most out of all the Honey iterations. It's nice to see Honey take on a new adventure instead of just a repeat of the manga's scenario with a twist.

Big fan of pretty much everything but the original 70s show. I remember seeing a clip of Shin Cutie Honey at a Rob Zombie concert and that selling me on his music. All around great franchise.

Good visuals but the story is a complete mess. It's the kind of pseudo-sequel where if you haven't seen the original you'll feel like you're missing important back-story, but if you -have- seen the original you'll just be confused the whole time how the two are supposed to fit together.

IMO Re is the better OVA Cutie Honey, and F the better 90s Cutie Honey.

Self explanatory. What have you been watching, /ar/? Pic related is from the 1988 adaption of Starship Troopers. I've also been watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden and Armored Trooper VOTOMS, both of which are very good.

I watched the Ideon: Be Invoked film for the first time just now. I won't spoil it for anyone reading who hasn't watched it, but I will say lmao. lol. It was certainly something.

a lot of char’s counterattack’s appeal for me comes in how it both feels like one long special episode and an unmythologized conclusion to char and amuro’s stories. both of them becoming failed adults in their own right unable to reach the expectations forced onto them. I cried watching the ending with the Neo Zeon and Federation soldiers all coming together to help Amuro stop Axis, I think it really embodies the core thesis behind Gundam- in that just as conflict is inevitable, human kindness will also persevere and that’s why we need to show the light of the human heart.

>>1254
Daimos is definitely the best of the Robot Romance shows, Combattler is good but falls off dramatically in the middle and Voltes while good definitely feels like a rough draft.

>>1236
>It's awful because its at odds with itself.
You put it so well. Was there an internal fight over the direction of the anime? Because even without being a Tominoid and knowing Gundam history it's what it feels like. Characters suddenly get transferred only to show up 30 episodes later without any explanation, not to mention that infamous "death". I don't really mind the comedic tone one bit, I mind the plot's lack of cohesion.

>>3229
I adore Turn A and its designs so much

everyone here surely old as hell to get pass the captcha

am in my 20's it's just a skill issue.
I've watched stuff like demon city and the original ranma anime

i got lum from urusei yatsura so i lucked out

Did you know? It's one of the best anime ever!

>>3931
I know you came here from twitter
but yeah it's ok

one must imagine key and sakura happy

I urge everyone that finished the show to listen to the only audio drama translated in English, you can find the rest of untranslated ones on nico by namesearching in japanese. https://youtu.be/KTjHDblZsAA

I liked the ambiguity of the show not giving us a concrete answer on Key and Sakura being half-sisters or not, because the show had already showed us how much she cared about Key. I know most read it as as romantic because of the Lain-Arisu parallels, but the frustration of not understanding and the disconnect she felt and YET going out of her way to help Key achieve her dream felt like a tired big sister trying to make her fucked up little sister be happy, even when she was struggling with her own shit. I may be projecting though.
