I don't care for EoSD but the possibility of a followup PCB remake brings me joy and hope for a better tomorrow.

 No.5476

The music will not be as good. I like the charm of older Touhou artwork too, the less samey standard anime character designs. This game will mostly be the same, have remixed music, have a modern redesign for the characters, same basic story etc. like metal gear triangle.

Plus side, more Rumia. This will be her second official game? Hopefully she eats someone.

>>5473
They will not make as much money. They know nobody has played anything before EoSD,so they are gonna milk us all for $$$.

 No.5481

File: 1781067459490.png (2.03 MB, 2000x1500, 78524359_p8.png)

It's cool and everything but there's certain anxieties about it that I have that I haven't seen others voice (man the state of touhou discussion elsewhere is just disappointing)

The sort of horrifying thing to me is that it'll be replacing the game in its original state in the minds of all the new fans that will play it (with all its eccentrities like the fact that you only get auto pick up at max power and the like, or the low resolution of the character portraits, or how dorky the graphic design is. On that point, how people might think that the "remastered" music replaces the original which is the most scary part.) but in the end, it's probably fine. Most people struggled to get a working version that didn't go at 9000 FPS anyways and apparently there will be a rebuilt version of the original game, which we can hope manages to properly replicate it.
If they do proceed to do 7, 7.5, 8, and 9, which already seems likely. It does refire that worry in me, since those games are easier to get working on a modern machine and thus have less of a barrier, and 7 specially since to me it's a very special game from its aesthethic and quirks (and from the fact it's the game I'm most nostalgic on), in the end, it goes back to this anxiety of the originals getting replaced in the conciousness and a certain fear that others won't engage with them and appreciate them on their own terms.

Well, I'm just rambling since I needed a place to express my worries. I already feel more calm and I'm picking my hopes back up, I think it'll be good if it gets people to properly engage with the games in an earnest way and if it gets them to engage with the rest of the franchise which are far more available on their own.

>>5476
It seems that they aren't going to be redesigns but just redrawn from the original artwork, just for a higher resolution, and the translations seem to be tasked upon by known translators and all. That said, we're probably heading for another few years of EoSD dominance in fanart, which will be a bit annoying

how do you guys go about scanning your doujinshis?

i have been thinking of ways to archive my collection in case anything ever happens to them. thin doujins werent a problem at all, but omnibuses on the other hand…

since most of the doujins i earn arent available for sale anymore, i try not to debind as many as i can during the process of scanning them. but what do i do in situations where its a necessary step ?!😭

 No.5474

i just scan them with my phone using microsoft lens. obviously far from the ideal setup but the cropping tool is very good and will stabilize the image, plus there's b&w filters. i wouldn't dare do anything more damaging to the spines

Recently got around to watching it, and was pleasantly surprised to find myself loving it. Mystery was great, which was complimented by countryside setting. It really knows how to create tension and ambient atmosphere as it manage d to make me feel uneasy. I heard it's a VN adaptation and there is also a manga, so definitely going to check it out sometime in the future.

Read the VN the way you want. I like both original and console sprites/backgrounds. Even if Higurashi was made for NVL style, ADV is still fine (but can get annoying for long monologues). The only important choices would be the censorship level and the OST (2014 is the original one iirc and not the MangaGamer remake to avoid copyright issues).

Unless they give him some sort of asspull (Which now that I think about it is pretty common in Dragon Ball…) I doubt he'll come back stronger. He did play a semi-important role in heroes though and he still is one of the strongest in all 12 universes so I feel like he will make another appearance but not on a level that rivals Goku.

Ive been watching alot 2000s stuff lately and am pleasantly surprised at how well most of it holds up. Ofcourse i had to hunt down the versions that i watched back then since alot of my nostalgia seems to be attached to them over later so-called better modern rereleases but that may be different for you.

>>149

R.O.D the TV really only is going to be remembered by those that caught it on anime unleashed, all five of us that watched it back then, with its messed up broadcast order. A shame because even today i think it stands out. The ova gets summed up in episode 14 and tied to the show so if you didnt watch that first youll be spoiled if you do after. I can say that i remember the ending to be WAY different than it was but 20 years since the last time you watched something will do that to you.

>>168

I rewatched this since i havent seen it since my bootleg days and i noticed they cleaned up the animation in it some. There was no dub for it back when i watched it so i gave that a watch also. Its not as bad as i remember but its still not great, ill comprise and upgrade my opinion to middling. This is another show i remember the ending being different but not as badly as the one above.

>>718

Witch hunter robin had a dub way before crunchyroll existed, i cant rewatch it the modern releases you can barely hear the BGM and the show is much too quiet without it.

Metropolis is really great, an all-timer for me, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about it, not even sakugaheads
I would say something about Big O, since it's well-liked among those who are into the specific genre convergence it goes for, but isn't really known outside of that but its first episode was Oct. 1999 ah too bad

 No.1194

>>1191
I'm pretty sure the only reason the show exists is because of the success of the OVA. I watched the former within the last couple years just because of how good the later was. I think it's still remembered especially for being a good ova before just before they generally stopped making notable ones past the early 2000s. Even in modern discussion people give a lot of focus to 90s (or near 90s) ovas. This could end up directing more people to the TV show.

I enjoyed them both for different reasons. The ova has pretty much no plot filler and barely even explains character motivations, but it's largely just about action, cute girls and good animation so it works well. The show necessarily has to linger and explain more to occupy more time which gives it a different feel, including a lot of downer moments
including making the former "good" guys the new "bad" guys.
I could easily see someone being disappointed by the show in comparison, but I liked getting to know more about the universe and characters after feeling really confused by certain parts of the ova in isolation. The fast pace and low exposition makes sense considering they were pulling from a multi-book light novel series for only 3 episodes originally, although I know the plots aren't exactly the same.

For related reasons, I've also considered reading the manga. Don't know if my moon-rune powers will ever be strong enough to read the actual books, even if I do maintain an interest.

I urge everyone that finished the show to listen to the only audio drama translated in English, you can find the rest of untranslated ones on nico by namesearching in japanese. https://youtu.be/KTjHDblZsAA

I liked the ambiguity of the show not giving us a concrete answer on Key and Sakura being half-sisters or not, because the show had already showed us how much she cared about Key. I know most read it as as romantic because of the Lain-Arisu parallels, but the frustration of not understanding and the disconnect she felt and YET going out of her way to help Key achieve her dream felt like a tired big sister trying to make her fucked up little sister be happy, even when she was struggling with her own shit. I may be projecting though.

Dear /cel/, what are some of your favorite normie-tier manga for their time? Lots of retro anime love here, little love for their manga counterparts, so let's share some. Picrel Love Hina, everyone I knew who read manga, read it as it was translated.

File: 1761827055557.jpg (213.83 KB, 737x1098, Rookies.jpg)

I love Rookies, if it counts (started in 1998).

I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did but Kawato is such an endearing character that I just fell in love with the whole thing. Seeing him go out of his way to do so much for that baseball team even when no one else would and leading all the students to actually want to try in Baseball again was just brilliant.

My favourite part of the manga will always be when in one game he goes up to an opposing pitcher who has been struggling in the game so far, tells him he's doing a fantastic job, then goes to the opposing coach to tell him to stop fucking around. He should take that kid off the mound and give him actual coaching advice so he can grow into a proper player (and adult) instead of this weird humiliation ritual he was forcing him to do to teach him a lesson. Then proceeding to return to his dugout and screaming out loud "AHHHHHH WHY DID I DO THAT I COULD'VE GOT THE TEAM SUSPENDED"

It's truly a one of a kind manga and it saddens me that everything else the mangaka has done is not fully translated yet, even Rokudenshi Blues is taking 20 years to translate and is still around 40 chapters away from being complete.

I'm not sure I'd call this a favorite but had no idea where to post it tbh. Push Man by Tatsumi Yoshihiro. A series of bleak gekiga one shots originally published in doujinshi magazines, giving Tatsumi free reign to make whatever he liked. The majority of the stories are bleak slice of life stories with absurd endings, mostly fixated on Japan's working classes and the soft underbelly of crime and sexual perversion. I don't think I've read anything this cynical. Sewage workers pilfer the corpses of dead children dumped in sewers, a man falls in love with a hostess through the TV set only to commit murder-suicide, a student rapes a woman he's infatuated with for no apparent reason etc. The artwork is suitably dark too. Claustrophobic interiors, grimy workplaces, dirty slums, and chaotic streets. The world feels dark, hopeless, suffocating, a bleak contrast with the popular image of 60s Japan's economic miracle.

ITT we list Urusei Yatsura 1981 blunders.

In episode 89 "Lum & Ataru: A Night Alone", Mendou and the gang are barefoot before barging into Ataru's room. After barging in, they are seen wearing socks.

In episode 161 "Small Magic Bottle! What's to Become of Me!?", two sets of cage appear in the same scene. Furthermore, a few frames earlier Lum threw the cage at Ataru but later she's seen approaching Ataru with the same cage in hand.

The 2nd half of the series with the new studio has a few characters that are given strange focus as if you're supposed to know who tf they are, even if they're nobodies. There's a black haired girl who gets a few lines and is referred to by her name a few times, but as far as I know she's anime original and a complete nobody.

I remember it being pretty good, only disappointment was the Vanilla Ice fight getting truncated, but otherwise I can appreciate it for being an alternate take on the original story. In a way it makes it feel more similar to parts 1 & 2 (which are my personal favorites), with it's brisker pace and a focus on fights that drive the story forward. OST is pretty awesome too.

I never really thought about it honestly, always felt like a "bad" adaptation of Part 3 but I've never actually watched it so I should give it a shot.

Still, wonder how it must've felt for the only Jojo related things someone in the west would know around this time would've probably been this OVA and the PS1/DC game.

Over all it's not a good adaption as it skips majority of the stands of the week and other stuff but it has fantastic animation

Many classic anime have been re-released, re-scanned, re-mastered, and re-edited countless times. This is a thread where you can post about differences between versions of any anime, from shitty upscales and botched crops, to alternate scenes, animation, and extended cuts. Try to avoid spoilers, so that if someone checks the thread for the “definitive” version of whatever they’re trying to watch they don’t get spoiled.

The new Lum is really eerie to look at because she's vaguely similar to the Lum we know and love but her face is drawn so differently its uncomfortable. Imagine if some you knew had their face transplanted and when they turn around, you see someone else. Its just creepy. Like her eyes are not in the same place or the same color. Her face is shaped vaguely differently, its more angular and sharper on the eye. She doesn't have that long, thick flowing hair and the color scheme is inverted and neon for some reason. Her expressions are so different it makes her seem like someone else completely and not for the better.

These might not seem significant, but if it's not done it's rather noticeable and the absence is why a lot of modern productions (especially American) are very visually bland.

Finally watched it last year after being on my radar for 10+ years. I didn't think it was very good overall, but it felt good to watch something that had been sitting idly in my mind for so long.

Some of the music was pretty good.

Generally looked pretty meh. The zero G sword fights stick out as an especially low point, just kinda flailing around in space.

Mechanical design was neat, especially between countries. Kind of reminded me of some of the designs in Mushihimesama and Panzer Dragoon. Maybe there's better comparisons, my mecha knowledge is kinda limited.

Only thing really keeping me interested for most of it was the messy drama between the brothers, or whatever, and maybe to a lesser extent the age gap pair. Couldn't get into the main pairing at all. I did kind of appreciate that a lot of the choices at the spring weren't obvious, but also a lot felt like kind of random and without meaning. The ending has stuck with me, at least on an aesthetic level I kind of love the idea of these two lovers refusing to make a choice and becoming time ghosts.

This is propably one of The best anime shows ever made. The animation quality in this one is unamtched, every episode looks like an OVA, and its a 90s 70 episode tv series. The characters are cute, and the story is cool (though the second arc is worse than the first one).

I'm about a season and a half through Legend of the Galactic Heros and am loving it. The mix of politics and space battles is extremely engaging.. I don't like the Alliance politics nearly as much, mainly because of how gormless Yang is; but democracy in general doesn't tickle my fancy. Though I'm a not worried about what's being set up with the Church of Terra. I seems like it might come in as a third power that unites the Alliance and Reich against it which would be lame (no spoilers though please.) I also love the art style, and wish more realistic character design wasn't so rare nowadays.

The founder of VNDB, Yorhel, passed away on March 17th. I can say with certainty that the otaku community would not be what it is today without his effort to catalog and organize novel games into a large database, allowing fans to be able to research their favorite writers, studios, and more. 私は日本語を勉強 as a direct result of this website existing, and I imagine many others also have undertaken this journey as well after visiting this website for a while. I hope the moderation team is able to keep it going - a site like this that isn't trying to sell you something, but purely exists for the fans, by the fans, is rare indeed these days. i hate this game so much. everything the game does feels like it was made to piss off the player on purpose. oh you bombed? TOO BAD! there's one tile left in a hard to reach location on the screen and you gotta fiddle with the yin yang orb or waste another bomb. oh, and then the game yells at you to hurry up and starts firing more pellets all over the screen as if hitting that last tile wasn't annoying enough already! fuck HRtP. I like challenge, otherwise i never would have got into Touhou, but HRtP isn't the good type of challenge, it's like the game was made to troll people. no wonder ZUN hates Mima and the PC-98 era, because it reminds him of this shitty game

I love HRtP and I'm not sure why people hate or find it difficult. Just get good at controlling the orb in the air by shooting it, and get large combos. If you bomb right before the orb hits you it sends the orb flying on top of the damage the bomb already does. You can full combo stages and melt bosses easily doing this.

I recently started another RPG Maker binge, and finally played Tobira no Densetsu. For the most part, I think it's alright. It very much is a product of its time, with obtuse mechanics and things that are very unintuitive, but I also believe it's a very commendable passion project. The amount of content is just baffling, and I feel you don't see many people putting that much stuff into their personal project anymore.
I'm currently going through the Towelket series again. There are quite a few gems here and there (Laughing Warawau, Dekapari, Wonder Girl Nekoashi Otome, Towelket 1…), and I'm surprised I don't see these games recommended more often.
I'm wondering what should I check next. I already played my fair share of Yume Nikki & Fangames, as well as some of the most classic horror games (Misao, Mad Father), but I was wondering if perhaps there's anything you guys had in mind. I remember a lot of people were recommending OFF in the past, and I didn't quite like the way the game looked… not because of the graphics themselves, there's just something about the presentation I really just didn't dig. But perhaps it's time to give it a chance.

It's really nice seeing someone else talking about these games. I've been a fan for a very long time. It's pretty hard to sell people on these games for some reason.

Even when you do get someone to check them out they rarely ever get past the first few games. Which sucks because some of the best game in the series come much later

I managed to convince some people to play through the series, but I get what you mean. I suppose the number of games scares people away, because otherwise, I can't even understand why these games aren't more popular. I even insist that people just skip a few entries just to get someone to pay the later games, to no luck… I believe those are on par (if not better in some cases) than a lot of other RPG Maker games than people usually recommend. Laughing Warawau easily could be a great classic, yet you don't really read much about these games online? At most you see some fanart, but other than that, it feels like these games are obscure just because people haven't managed to go past the original trilogy.

Anyone who loves something will be interested in the history of that thing. If you like animation, you will love to watch all the classics from the past, read about their history, how they were made, what influenced them. Its the same with baseball, movies, photography, any other interest. You like it for its own sake.

If you like something purely to come off as “underground” or “retro” you are pretty shallow. So called Gen Z is all about style over substance. There is nothing “underground” about people today. We'll be reading the remake which has been translated to English. You can get it on steam or https://nyaa.si/view/1701057

Played through most of the prologue. I can't say I'm a fan of the visual style. The character movements can look like a motion comic, although far better drawn and animated. It commits the same sins that plague other VNs: too much exposition, obvious foreshadowing, contrived encounters. I find Yuki quite a dull character, an off the shelf good girl, but I hate idol culture so maybe its just bias? The VN is just setting the table so hopefully there's a lot more in store.

I'm joining the reading club, I read some yesterday and will continue today.
I know next to nothing about White Album so I like this pick…
Last time I joined one of these, we read Shuffle. Was on 4chan/jp/

 No.4489

Wait… is this VN getting me to cheat on my gf?

 No.4579

This VN is basically a dating sim but I don't actually want to follow the other girls' routes because the MC already has a gf. It feels weird, and also slow and grindy. I kept expecting this to be an opening or for it to throw out some kind of narrative hook, but it doesn't.

Often overlooked, I think there's a lot of good retro anime based on historical events that get often overlooked. Let's have a thread about them.
I'll start with Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, adapted from the 1868 novel Little Women about the lives of four sisters during the American Civil War.

Having already watched a few episodes: don't. It's slow and boring and all the characters suck.

It's too bad, because the historical period is interesting, but the actual show is shit

The hard part for me is finding period anime that does justice to the setting. Often, historical periods in anime feel like backdrops for what are ultimately very 21st century characters. This problem plagues historical fiction.

Despite the fact that this thread is almost 4 years old, nobody has noticed that the show OP posted isn't "Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari", it's "Wakakusa no Yon Shimai"

I've been watching the former recently, and was surprised to find out that there are actually two separate 80's anime adaptations of Alcott's Little Women.

From Wikipedia:
>This series is sometimes confused with Nippon Animation's 1987 World Masterpiece Theater TV series Tales of Little Women, as both series were dubbed in English and broadcast on U.S. cable TV in the 1980s (the 1981 series on CBN, and the 1987 series on HBO). In addition, both TV series share a voice actress: Keiko Han, who plays Beth in this TV series, and Meg in the 1987 series.

To add to that, both series have, "Wakakusa" in the title:
"Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari/ 愛の若草物語" can be translated literally as "Young Grass Love Story" and "Wakakusa no Yon Shimai/ 若草の四姉妹" as "Four Sisters of Young Grass". It probably sounds a lot better in Japanese. As a point of reference, the incredibly common Japanese word for "girl" "shoujo/ 少女" is literally written with the kanji for "little" and "women", so the original title might sound weird to them too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This kinda makes the '87 anime look like a ripoff, but honestly I've been enjoying it up to episode 19. I much prefer the Ghibli-esque style to the Cutie Honey look of the '81 anime. I'm surprised neither show is more popular in America, given it's sincere attempt to adapt one of their most highly regarded and culturally significant novels.

Seems like the title was popularized in Japan by an old film and book translation. And the youtube video OP posted is yet another adaptation lol, a special from 1980.
I wonder if Wakakusa no Charlotte's title was a nod to the book. It fits that show though.

Adding on, check fumo.website for a list of resellers and everything else. In most occasions you'll need to employ proxies/forwarders to actually place the order on your behalf. Total price for me is around $110 USD.

There's a fumo project discord server where there's some sellers. I got my kaguya (picrel) secondhand from that server. Riskier though.

I honestly feel like it depicts how heart crushing NEET life gets, how you can't crawl away, and how hopes die through each day. How others lose hope in you, and how the only way out, is at the end through yourself.
How you push away friends you once had, cycle through hobbies, all just to look for an escape. For hope. And the fact that you just keep looking for someone to relate, to understand. Only for nobody to be able to get you. The ending song for the anime defines it for me.

I am currently reading Umineko, yes you should either read the higurashi VN or watch the anime/read the manga beforehand for reasons that would be a spoiler. I've gone trough all 3 versions, watching the anime would be a good alternative because it has less sol without losing out on the story or characters.
(but don't watch that awful 2020's remake/sequel)
In many ways Umineko feels like a continuation of the exploration of ideas present in higurashi.
Fair warning: Umineko is 120-200 hours long and also has a lot of sol moments.

We know Rumiko has an interest in mythology, and that Lum, Benten, and Oyuki, are clear parllels to real world mythological figures. Ran is the odd-one out and for 40 years fans have tried to figure out which specific mythological creature Ran actually is.

She has some kind of life-drain kiss so she's a Succubus? Is that the European variety or a Japanese one? No one's ever been able to pin her down exactly.

It's entirely possible Rumiko didn't think of anything specific so it's a red-herring.

>Q: What book or film to you has the most impressive world building?

>Ted Chiang: There’s this Japanese anime film from the late ’80s called “Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise.” It’s the story sort of a space program in this country which is not Japan. It’s not in our world. But it’s a country that is at a somewhat mid-20th century level of technological development. And they are trying to get into space. And I just loved all the details of sort of the physical culture of this imagined nation. The coins are not flat metal disks, they’re metal rods. And the televisions, they’re not rectangles. Their cathode ray tubes are completely circular, so they’re watching TV on circular screens.

>All these little details, just the way their newspapers fold, I just really was impressed by the way that the animators for that film, they invented an entirely new physical culture for this movie. The movie is not about those things, but they really fleshed out this alternate world just as the backdrop for the story that they wanted to tell.

"A denpa song (電波ソング) is a type of Japanese music that is intentionally strange and catchy. Denpa music has grown into a subculture within Japan, forming a significant aspect of otaku culture, and has large numbers of dōjin circles and music artists dedicated to denpa music." - Wikipedia

Use this thread to talk about denpa music happenings, releases, artists, etc! More specifically doujin releases/circles.

I just found this site and there's a Denpa thread! This makes me very happy. I'm wondering if Denpa songs are seeing somewhat of a resurgence? I've seen them referenced in a few games and such, not sure how others feel about those things. It could be nice to see some new life breathed into Denpa.

I will post some Youtube playlists and videos of Denpa albums that I personally believe are required listening/incredibly high quality Denpa.

A classic from IOSYS: ワァオ! ハイパー電波チャン (Wow! Hyper Denpa-chan)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDDaXcQXw4c82YoFmqfNkc8Hdksigems0

It features many vocalists and remixes of other Denpa. Including Momoi Haruko, MOSAIC.WAV, Yamamoto Momiji and miko. It is an assorted collection of ARM's works.

The strange work of circle Hyper Beroove Rebirth: ぱんださんようちえん (Panda-san Kindergarten)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGQHbqp8xs_eFupBKhYuzApztfmUMg92T

A very weird collection of songs, it features a mixture of cutesy loli-style vocals and Ojisan vocals. An eclectic variation in styles keeps the album feeling fresh every listen. Spearheaded by the incredible Mirawi (rest in peace) and bermei.inazawa. The final track, Neko Nabe, even had a doujin game based on it!

Rumiko added Ryu-chan instead of starting a new comic because she was bored of UY. Ryu actually fits the new setting and theme of the series which is revolving around the whacky hijinks at Tomobiki high school. Benten is more of a left-over from the original design where the comic would revolve around alien-yokai that show up and harass Ataru because he's unlucky.

Nitrate film was used well into 1950s, so there probably was animation filmed with it. Old school Disney animated movies were captured on nitrate negatives and the earliest Japanese animated features go back to 1917 so I'm pretty sure it silver nitrate was used.

>That's what I thought!
Gotta love that technique when they show something and then "guess" what the viewers are thinking — often word for word. Only happens in anime for some reason.

So far Vividred has been delivering on the seriousness part despite the genre, both in tech and in drama. And it's funny how all military actions here are strangely reminiscent of NGE. Plus it's definitely thread-related, which is a cherry on top.
