Do you really have to finish Higurashi before reading Umineko for a good experience? The Slice of Life segments are a slog.

I am currently reading Umineko, yes you should either read the higurashi VN or watch the anime/read the manga beforehand for reasons that would be a spoiler. I've gone trough all 3 versions, watching the anime would be a good alternative because it has less sol without losing out on the story or characters.
(but don't watch that awful 2020's remake/sequel)
In many ways Umineko feels like a continuation of the exploration of ideas present in higurashi.
Fair warning: Umineko is 120-200 hours long and also has a lot of sol moments.
If you do decide to read it i suggest you use https://nyaa.si/view/1325411

We're starting off the VN Book Club with a story that often gets overlooked by it's sequel, but one that was an important milestone in Leaf's history regardless: it's WHITE ALBUM.
We'll be reading the remake which has been translated to English. You can get it on steam or https://nyaa.si/view/1701057
Please make sure to use spoiler tags when discussing your progress!

I haven't torrented a file since the days of limewire lol thanks for the link. I have one VN to finish up and I'll get started on this ASAP.

 No.4435

OK, I've already read WA so I'm out for this month. But let me tell you some info:

1) Thank God you're not playing OG from 1998, as many of you would be obliterated by its gameplay. Remake is far easier (in a good sense), albeit it remains somewhat repetitive to my taste.

3) Getting to Morikawa's route was hard. Thouth, you won't have any problems getting to other routes.

2) Imo, the best girl (and she also has the best route)–the newly added girl. I suggest everyone to keep her route last-to-read. You won't be disappointed.

 No.4436

Remake? I only have a copy of the original ><

Haven't read this one before, but I've been meaning to so this is a good excuse to start it!

We know Rumiko has an interest in mythology, and that Lum, Benten, and Oyuki, are clear parllels to real world mythological figures. Ran is the odd-one out and for 40 years fans have tried to figure out which specific mythological creature Ran actually is.

She has some kind of life-drain kiss so she's a Succubus? Is that the European variety or a Japanese one? No one's ever been able to pin her down exactly.

It's entirely possible Rumiko didn't think of anything specific so it's a red-herring.

LUM IS AN ONI, BENTEN IS ONE OF THE SEVEN LUCKY GODS, KURAMA IS A TENGU, AND OYUKI IS A YUKI-ONNA, EACH OF LUM'S FRIENDS IS BASED ON SOME MYTHICAL BEING OR MONSTER.
BUT WITH RAN-CHAN, IT'S UNCLEAR.
WHAT EXACTLY IS SHE? SINCE SHE CAN SUCK THE YOUTH OUT OF PEOPLE WITH A KISS, COULD SHE POSSIBLY BE A SUCCUBUS?
I THINK A LOT OF FANS ARE WONDERING ABOUT THIS TOO.

TAKAHASHI: I DON'T REALLY KNOW. BUT YEAH, SHE DEFINITELY IS SOMETHING WITH POWERS LIKE THAT. SHE'S A MEMBER OF SOME KIND OF SUPERNATURAL SPECIES."

>Q: What book or film to you has the most impressive world building?

>Ted Chiang: There’s this Japanese anime film from the late ’80s called “Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise.” It’s the story sort of a space program in this country which is not Japan. It’s not in our world. But it’s a country that is at a somewhat mid-20th century level of technological development. And they are trying to get into space. And I just loved all the details of sort of the physical culture of this imagined nation. The coins are not flat metal disks, they’re metal rods. And the televisions, they’re not rectangles. Their cathode ray tubes are completely circular, so they’re watching TV on circular screens.

>All these little details, just the way their newspapers fold, I just really was impressed by the way that the animators for that film, they invented an entirely new physical culture for this movie. The movie is not about those things, but they really fleshed out this alternate world just as the backdrop for the story that they wanted to tell.

ah yes, the anime that made me realize all I need to do to stop being a NEET is starve because someone didn't cook food for me.

 No.1063

Has anyone read the author's new "reboot" of welcome to the NHK? I remember his afterword in the original novel where he talks about despite the success that years later he was still a NEET, so I'm curious if that remained the case and especially his perspective on the change in otaku culture from heisei to reiwa.

I honestly feel like it depicts how heart crushing NEET life gets, how you can't crawl away, and how hopes die through each day. How others lose hope in you, and how the only way out, is at the end through yourself.
How you push away friends you once had, cycle through hobbies, all just to look for an escape. For hope. And the fact that you just keep looking for someone to relate, to understand. Only for nobody to be able to get you. The ending song for the anime defines it for me.

Recently got around to watching it, and was pleasantly surprised to find myself loving it. Mystery was great, which was complimented by countryside setting. It really knows how to create tension and ambient atmosphere as it manage d to make me feel uneasy. I heard it's a VN adaptation and there is also a manga, so definitely going to check it out sometime in the future.

Mahoyo status: finished
Another Type-Moon masterpiece; Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime walked so that Mahoyo could run.

I can only imagine the sheer disappointment people who've read this in 2012 must've felt with the medium if they thought that Nasu's magnum opus would set a new standard for visual novels.
Going back to static sprites and CGs afterwards must feel like moving back into your 3rd world shithole after spending a week-long vacation in Tokyo.
I'm genuinely like my boy Sono-G in that regard; I can never return to life on the mountain (a life without Mahoyo) after coming into contact with society (Mahoyo).

Now that I've read it*, I can finally answer the eternal question that's plagued Mahoyo discourse since time immemorial:
Aoko > Alice
…but that can change with the sequel, which will surely focus more on this somber and mysterious, yet lovable, roommate of our heroes.
*"it" being Mahoyo

To every /djn/ resident who hasn't read Mahoyo yet - what's stopping you from experiencing Nasu at her peak?
To all of the others, please tell me your thoughts on the following topics:
Who was it that Aoko "met" for the first time in the prologue?

Just finished the first Muv Luv.
Pretty good! I enjoyed Extra (even if it was a bit of a drag) but I really really loved Unlimited–it's such an improvement over Extra in every single way, and it really feels like the main cast comes into their own here. They just feel more cohesive as a group, and I think Unlimited actually made me laugh more than Extra ever did.

I just found this site and there's a Denpa thread! This makes me very happy. I'm wondering if Denpa songs are seeing somewhat of a resurgence? I've seen them referenced in a few games and such, not sure how others feel about those things. It could be nice to see some new life breathed into Denpa.

I will post some Youtube playlists and videos of Denpa albums that I personally believe are required listening/incredibly high quality Denpa.

A classic from IOSYS: ワァオ! ハイパー電波チャン (Wow! Hyper Denpa-chan)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDDaXcQXw4c82YoFmqfNkc8Hdksigems0

It features many vocalists and remixes of other Denpa. Including Momoi Haruko, MOSAIC.WAV, Yamamoto Momiji and miko. It is an assorted collection of ARM's works.

The strange work of circle Hyper Beroove Rebirth: ぱんださんようちえん (Panda-san Kindergarten)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGQHbqp8xs_eFupBKhYuzApztfmUMg92T

A very weird collection of songs, it features a mixture of cutesy loli-style vocals and Ojisan vocals. An eclectic variation in styles keeps the album feeling fresh every listen. Spearheaded by the incredible Mirawi (rest in peace) and bermei.inazawa. The final track, Neko Nabe, even had a doujin game based on it!

Rumiko added Ryu-chan instead of starting a new comic because she was bored of UY. Ryu actually fits the new setting and theme of the series which is revolving around the whacky hijinks at Tomobiki high school. Benten is more of a left-over from the original design where the comic would revolve around alien-yokai that show up and harass Ataru because he's unlucky.

Gotta love that technique when they show something and then "guess" what the viewers are thinking — often word for word. Only happens in anime for some reason.

So far Vividred has been delivering on the seriousness part despite the genre, both in tech and in drama. And it's funny how all military actions here are strangely reminiscent of NGE. Plus it's definitely thread-related, which is a cherry on top.

>City Hunter 3's OP has her doing shit I'd LOVE to see her do in the show
Yeah, that great intro really set up something that never happened. Kind of odd how different it is from the other intros, with its narrative.

Although I don't agree that Kaori should've been using her hammer in actual fights. It belongs to the comedic sections of City Hunter, which are sharply, and loveably, divided from the serious ones. I think I can vaguely remember her trying to use it once and immediately gets dommed by a criminal, as a kind of meta joke about the hammer not actually being real. It also fits in with the hyper-masculinised men and hyper-feminised women of the 80s aesthetic. Kaori is the frail, innocent woman that needs to be saved by the strong, heroic man. In commercial American tv and film from the era this may have been vulgar and shallow, but it works in City Hunter.

>the less said about the amount of children/teens that fall for him the better. While those were some pretty funny jokes of desperately trying to not seem like a pedo, it felt like it happened WAYYYYY too often.

I think the same reason City Hunter could happily include gay people and transvestites was the same reason it could show Ryo lusting after teenage girls. It is completely without an agenda and is simply motivated by Hojo's objectivity and desire to create an entertaining world. Sometimes he uses the ridiculously masculine traits of transvestites for comic relief, another times he uses the passableness of a transvestite for comedic relief. I didn't see anything wrong with the many teen romance subplots; it is typical of Japanese culture and Ryo always ends up running away from them anyway.

 No.3378

>>3377
Yeah that's fair about Kaori. I was just trying to spitball some ideas here to make her more than what she is. She's a terrible shot with a gun from what I recall and the few times she does try and do things by herself other people have to help her and it's a real shame she can't have some moments to shine. Even a bit of luck could take her a long way with a few clients and that's pretty much all I wanted for her where she can handle herself but obviously gets overwhelmed and requires Ryo's help in the end especially near the end of the series.

As for the lolicon angle, I actually quite enjoyed those jokes. They were always pretty funny since everyone can understand *not* wanting to seem like a pedo and it's made even worse by the fact it's always the kids/teens initiating it and Ryo desperately trying to remedy the situation.

I also did find the use of gay and trans people to be surprising as well. Ryo frequents gay bars, dresses as a woman in a few episodes and jokingly convinces other people Kaori is a man much to her displeasure. It feels both progressive and mocking but I honestly liked that aspect of it. You never really knew what kind of angle each episode would take and it was always pretty funny.

 No.4212

File: 1767055348911.png (1.81 MB, 1396x1071, kaori kidnapped 3.png)

I just finished watching the fourth series. City Hunter '91. I think it took a while to grow on me because my expectations were that Ryo would be a badass with a goofy side rather than a goofball with a badass side. I think the first series drags a bit compared to the follow up three, which I much preferred. Although it's episodic, they do show other sides to Ryo's character as it goes along and some of his backstory is fleshed out which is good. Kaori also takes quite a while to realise she's in love with him. There's also some soft continuity with occasional episode material and characters reoccurring.

The basic gag of Ryo reacting to mokkori babes and then getting the hammer never got old for me. I like the style of how women are drawn in this show. It's a bit odd that Kaori is mistaken for a boy in some episodes and then characters will call her pretty in others. Tomboyish sure, but she always comes across as cute and obviously a girl to me, and her seething over Ryo never gets annoying because her voice actress is very endearing (Kazue Ikura). I guess the "looks like a boy" thing is a bit of comedic exaggeration at her expense.

Ryo being played by Akira Kamiya is also interesting because for a character who looks so much like Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken, it's fun for him to have the same voice actor yet give such a drastically different performance as befits such a drastically different personality. It shows his talent.

My one real complaint about this show is similar to my one real complaint about the Space Adventure Cobra TV show; it's that although there are characters who are near equals and times when he seems seriously in danger, there isn't really anyone who gives enough doubt about whether Ryo will prevail. No one ever really gets hyped up even when there's a two parter either. I get that it's not that sort of show, because it's episodic and more light hearted, but the moments when it gets serious are very good precisely because of the contrast. I liked the face off with Robert Harrison, and the one with Umibozu in the cemetary. I really feel like the show could have used a consistent rival, in a soft continuity way. Umibozu occasionally dips into that role but overall he's on too good terms with Ryo and Kaori. A character like Kenshiro from Hokuto no Ken may be overpowered on paper, but because it was serialized, his villains got to have some build up and although he usually dispatched them easily, the few times he Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

 No.4231

>>4212
That's an interesting take, I always liked the laid back nature of it and how every new case was someone new for Ryo to go up against.

They do somewhat play with the idea of there being people better than Ryo in the show, Umibozu is his obvious equal and I vaguely remember that american but you are right in there being no real antagonist in the earlier parts (they do reveal one later on that's implied to have a connection to Ryo and Kaori iirc) but beyond that there's nothing.

Personally, I never minded because most episodes were entertaining enough. They do a good job of making plot points that have weak characters thrown into the mix that makes Ryo's job harder by them existing. Like I always have a soft spot for that two parter with the girl in the wheelchair since it's both sweet and also a VERY difficult person to try and protect but Ryo does it flawlessly (it also has a hilarious ending).

As for the movies, they're alright. None of them ever reach the heights of City Hunter 2 imo.

>I guess the "looks like a boy" thing is a bit of comedic exaggeration at her expense.

I still laugh at the amount of times Ryo just annoys her by telling everyone around them she's a guy and then her finding out and getting mad. It's so hilariously childish.

Hating a manga/anime is one thing, but what's much worse is being DISAPPOINTED with one.
There's a lot you like and a lot you dislike….
Post shit that disappointed you, preferably with your reasoning.
For me, Rosavam was a disappointment. Incoming wall of text that I wrote down like two months ago when I read the manga.

I have not seen this or read the manga in a while and they both are heavy with teen melodrama, although the movie more-so. It does feel that this heavy soppy melodrama does overload the more subtle points the manga seemed to be making. I would have preferred it if this story did not go in a romantic direction, or possibly moves in that way but reveals it to be yet another case of miscommunication. What the manga had to say about communication seemed a lot more interesting than the typical anti-bullying narrative in soppy high school melodramas. The suicide scene was totally uncalled for and just shoved in to gouge more tears from the audience. Where the manga and the movie are at their best is seeing the MC struggling to communicate with someone who does not use verbal language and vice versa. Instead we get sidetracked in melodrama. Sure the movie is worse at this, but even those encounter scenes were fascinating to watch. At the end of the day, animation has to be marketed to someone so turning it into a sloppy teen drama makes sense.

without a doubt the 2004 reboot of tetsujin. i had very high expectations after watching the giant robo ova, i loved how it looked and i loved how old school tetsujin and the other mechas/villains looked!!
It started pretty good but as the series went on they weren't able to handle both the main story with the sublots introduced in every new episode, resulting in a messy story without a satisfing ending.
also they glaze the hell out of tetsujin only for it to get wrecked immediately by the new villain's gimmick.
I don't think you shouldn't watch it cause some episodes are really good, but overall it doesn't know what to do with itself.

Funny you say that, it's my favorite adaptation of Hellsing despite it's shortcomings. But I do agree the second half is weaker, but you can tell it was meant to be part of a larger story that was cut down when it turned out it wouldn't be renewed for a continuation due to low ratings (hell, there's this early animation sequence that even adapted the Brazil sequence), that's the impression I kinda got from the finale. You can tell Konaka was going to make a much longer story in a similar style to his other works.

 No.1094

>>1067
I actually really liked this adaptation it felt very close to the writing style of Yokoyama in his manga but yes it's nothing alike Giant Robo (and nothing will ever be as good). It's definitely not a show for everyone and probably one of the most story focused Super Robot show since the combat isn't the priority and Shotaro doesn't win a lot. There's also an original movie that is more action focused so maybe give that one a try.

I can understand not enjoying Gundam; most shows are flawed with odd pacing, and sometimes it can be hard to understand who is from which faction and what is the overall goal of the show (Gundam Victory). I personally enjoy Gundam from a universe perspective as the shows aren't the most entertaining thing to watch, but there's great world-building and cool characters, mobile suits, and so on (and often an amazing soundtrack, shoutout to Victory once again).
I also understand your hate for Newtype. I didn't like it at first; it felt a bit too sci-fi and convenient for the plot, but I eventually got used to it.

I also would like to say that Gundam ZZ isn't a good show, it's boring, most of the cast is boring, and the only important moment gets ruined by the ending. It's a show where nothing matters, and it just exists to remove everything Zeta created so that Tomino could make his movie sequel to 79. I'm sorry ZZ fans, but to me, the love this show received recently just seems like contrarian revisionism…

Remember to make plans for New Year's Day/Night as we hang out in Gikopoi again, as is tradition.
If you're someone that has plans to try streaming stuff like anime or games or audio, now is the time to do the troubleshooting because it can be very annoying to set it up since you have to convert the mic signal to some sort of emulated audio thing.
Anyway, I hope to see you there. Remember to be on your best wapanese behavior because we'll be interacting with other communities! We must ensure a wapanese cultural victory!

Or, Kiyohiko Azuma & Keiichi Arawi - mangakas who the best SoL/CGDCT stories. Unlike a lot of modern, seasonal anime - these two shows are timeless and can be enjoyed by anyone, anywhere. I've tried to watch other SoL anime, some I've enjoyed momentarily, while others I completely forgot I had watched after a while. But there's something very special about Azumanga and Nichijou that have stayed with me. I think it's the relatability of the characters, the comfortable, comedic nature of the shows, as well as the "cuteness" of it all. What I've found most important is that the girls in both shows feel real - they're not written as tropes with flat personalities. I'd love to know if anyone else has similar thoughts or has some good CGDCT/SoL shows that have gone unnoticed.

I finished watching it a week ago, I almost teared up at the end. Made me reminisce about my own graduation a bit. Didn't even feel watching anything else after it that evening until the emotions settled.
I knew very little about Azumanga before watching, I tend to watch anime going in completely blind. I expected more of an absurd comedy anime than a more pure CGDCT SoL, with how there was an uptick in unhinged zoomer memes involving Azumanga in the past few years and from that popular "Hello everynyan/ Oh my gah" clip. It didn't feel like a drag to watch either despite the 26 episodes. I can see why it's in so many favourite lists.
Please don't hit on my head with a rock 😨 K-On is one of my favourite anime and the definitive CGDCT and SoL anime in my head

Just look at that pic related. Mundanely disgusting despite looking all alien. Isn't it lovely? Soldier classes, too, for one, but their slits are a bit NSFW so I'll pass on posting one.

For others, only some Bloodborne stuffs get into this territory this good. Must be the Japanese yokai inspirations since the "original" yokai "designs" were similar in spirit. Fascinating. I think I should research and cross-check this angle deep.

Nightmare of Beatrice showing me through her some new special scenario with extra tortures, like it's some festival. It was extra "classic Middle Ages witch" themed as some victim was also being boiled in a cauldron, and another was impaled and crushed via some castle trapdoor.
Nightmare of LD and Bern following me by flight while they treated me with worry, like I'm retarded for trying to escape by parkouring through some castle ruins.
Nightmares of debating against LD and Bern, and I had to debate through a shoddy position.

Many classic anime have been re-released, re-scanned, re-mastered, and re-edited countless times. This is a thread where you can post about differences between versions of any anime, from shitty upscales and botched crops, to alternate scenes, animation, and extended cuts. Try to avoid spoilers, so that if someone checks the thread for the “definitive” version of whatever they’re trying to watch they don’t get spoiled.

Ive been going on a nostalgic toonami and adult swim binge lately watching some shows and finally caught up to cowboy bebop and have come to some conclusions.
For years ive heard about them changing the songs, sound effects and redoing the dub on these modern releases and after watching some of them i kinda see why people now really dont get into these older shows, its because you literally arent getting the same product we were exposed to years ago.

Example: here is two videos of the same iconic scene from episode 4. One is a simple vhs tv rip and the other is from the old blu ray.

https://files.catbox.moe/mdqgzt.mp4

https://files.catbox.moe/4d9zvb.mp4

Ignoring the quality of the vhs rip why is the audio so different between them?
Why did they feel the need to redo the sound effects and bgm? Some are completely missing and some are completely different.
Someone that never seen it when it was on tv wouldnt know there was ever a difference but someone that did would hear it immediately because you dont just remember seeing it but also HEARING it.
Depending on your perspective this isnt as bad as what was done to other shows like gundam 0083 for the modern releases, where they redubbed the ENTIRE THING over and both gato and kou now sound like they are out of breath with all the emotion sucked out and all the sound effects feel like they were royalty free stuff taken from youtube.

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

 No.4138

An example of an update actually improving stuff. Though, the original isn't really as bad as the description implies IMO.

>The 4th episode entitled Yashigani Hofuru (ヤシガニ屠る), lit. "feasting on coconut crab"), which aired on April 24, 1998, was initially worked on by a South Korean animation company, San Ho Studio. They only had basic manuals of the characters. The result was so dismal in quality that it was later reworked for the Laserdisc releases.

Here is the clip from the dvd since its hard to make a point with a blurry tv rip, the first dvd for america if im correct.

https://files.catbox.moe/or2y8w.mp4

Notice how Harrisons breathing can be heard, you can hear the glass break when Murdock presses the button, Spikes mouth isnt out of sync with the audio when he says they wont bitch about them blowing up the missile, you can hear the sound of the missile release from her ship, Spikes cannon sounds arent different nor is the display making any sound when it pops up, his cannon sound isnt different, the BGM isnt out of sync, Fayes missiles make a sound when they trail after firing, Spikes alarms arent different and niether are the sounds as they exit the gate.

What's everyone's favorite episode of Patlabor? For me it's a tossup between one of the goofier episodes like the ones where they go into the gator labyrinth and SV2's Longest Day from the original OVA.

I tried watching the TV series, but I just couldn't stay with it. There first few episodes were all just a bunch of "funny" things happening, with no real overarching story arch. Is the whole thing just one lame comedy gag after another or is there a point where things start to get interesting?

The last episode of the New Files hits me really hard, but I don't know if it counts, since it doesn't stand alone. It takes the entire context to really feel it. The meaning flows back under the story and changes it while leaving it all intact. It's beautiful.
To be safe, I'll say the one where they all get food poisoning.

IIRC Oshii has stated somewhere that he viewed Patlabor as a continuation of his work on Urusei Yatsura, so it makes sense that he'd be more attuned to the comedic angle of it than the dramatic.

Well, Flash 3 was fun. I say that for all of Dirty Pair but I really did just find myself chuckling or smiling at whatever stupid plot the girls have found themselves in this episode. Didn't really care for the OP and ED this time around, really liked 1 and 2's though.

Alright, the first episode was surprisingly good. I like concepts like this and this episode was surprisingly good at keeping everything suspenseful. Once again though, here's a very KEI CENTERED EPISODE which again reinforces her as the main character in my eyes. Did find it funny seeing her change a diaper then get embarrassed over the lil baby penis (pure tbh) and ending it with having to "breastfeed" the baby to avoid capture which is both dumb and somewhat smart for a person in her extreme situation. That second episode though....what an interesting one, Monica was a CCS reference, right? The entire episode was stupid but I didn't really hate it or anything, just laughed at how odd it was. The dub (which I decided to do for this episode) also made the insults a lot more funny too. That third episode was a lot of fun too, always enjoy sports anime and having a generic "HARD WORK AND GUTS" coach is quite fun, I do wish we saw some actual Volleyball instead of the training part, that episode also felt very "Flash" since I couldn't imagine the originals doing an episode like this. I liked the 4th episode as well, the kid was quite unique, can't think of another character that tried to copy a girl as a robot and love the robotic version when the real one was there the entire time, was quite humourous to see actually and I didn't expect Yuri to wear the original costume in this episode, what a nice surprise. Also, very nice to have a Yuri centered episode as well, feels like we're always with Kei. I wonder if the kid was meant to represent the fans in some way, felt like a message to them to not focus on a fake girl you've made pure in your head (Yuri) and instead go out and find a real girl. As for the final episode, it reminded me slightly of the last episode of Bubblegum Crisis which was nice, plus having a chief centered episode was nice. Always enjoy when there's some aspect like a child hostage the good guys need to deal with, although I do wish there was a bit more action.

Overall, I'd rate Flash as inferior Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

I actually get a few of the episodes of Flash 2 and 3 mixed up order wise but I did enjoy them both. The volley ball episode being a prominent stand out, for a few reasons, but there's some good ones in there. It's a bit of a shame we didn't get anymore because I feel like they were really starting to develop their stride as they went on. Maybe see a movie or something.

Now that I think of it, what really are the core themes of Urusei Yatsura? Uncontrollable lust? The soulless emptiness of the Ahrimanic female form? Maybe there's some subliminal Platonic messaging about how true love begins with physical beauty but transcends lust? Is it all just a joke? Does the coming of Lum to Earth represent the overflowing light of the Ein Sof? Maybe its a more immanent jab at globalization? Japan at the butt of an intergalactic empire, except Martians instead of Amerifats. Of course, all the beings of Japanese mythology are revealed to be insufferable aliens, so maybe Japan is special after all? Maybe Mendou represents America with its over the top imperial vision and Ataru is Japan, with Imperial Japan's simultaneous lust and disregard for the rest of Asia? The body of Lum, like Christ, is a symbol, albeit for Asia. Shinobu can be Russia. It suits her personality, colder than Siberian winter. A political allegory. A schizophrenic episode. I demand some two bit 22 year old with holding a decapitated boom mic 2 inches away from their face explain this all to me with chilledcow lofi beats in a succulent 3 hour video.

Literally anything better than god damn Inaba. I don't think that tool ever once stood up for himself and let Shinobu walk all over him. Ataru and Mendo would have both called out her bullshit.

Considering Joe is THE boxing manga yea I would say he ripped it off or at least capitalized off its popularity. The other guy mentioned the different artstyles, but they don't mention the similarities. The muscle tone is clearly taken from Joe. It's like taking the Mcdonalds arch, turning it upside down, changing the color, and making a new burger chain. The details don't really matter, especially since Ippo is the crappier narrative, when it's obviously a ripoff, by that if it weren't for Joe it wouldn't exist.

All boxing fiction fixates on the underdog because it reflects the reality of the "sport" (really just legalized assault) and its what makes boxing appealing. You don't become a human punching bag if you don't have to. When was the last upper class rich kid from the suburbs to become a legit boxing champion? They are all poor kids, refugees, homeless people, ethnic minorities, proles from working families, and kids who were bullied at school. Now a lot of boxing fiction has this "pull yourself up by the bootstraps and be the self made man" theme which is bourgeois capitalist propaganda, as if individual effort can overcome hard societal obstacles.

Ashita no Joe subverts this theme because its heavily implied Joe dies in the end, slumping over in his corner so you can work your ass off, but you can never quite escape or it just kills you. So did boxing save Joe or did it kill him? If he's really dead, aren't we in someway complicit for cheering on a bloodsport where young men are beaten and severely injured? By comparison, Hajime no Ippo feels like a more sanitized depiction of the fight game with all the moral ambiguity stripped away.

 No.4111

Ippo references or cribs from Joe quite a lot, other than the stuff already mentioned. Like Takamura eating a tomato a day to diet like Rikiishi, one of the characters being essentially Joe with a kansai accent, the world champion being a pretty blatant expy of the world champ from Joe.

But if we're really to compare them generally then Joe just has much more substance. At the end of the day Ippo is for the most part a feel-good sports manga that tends to settle into a status quo and repeatedly reset to it for hundreds of chapters at a time, and most of it consists of throwing a kid with no personality in a boxing ring to win over and over again. Ashita no Joe is a study of a very complex character whose circumstances and psychology are constantly changing and evolving, gets into things like philosophy of life, and for as much as Joe finds meaning through picking up boxing it's much more upfront about him having to grapple with the destruction and even death that boxing can bring into people's lives. It's also a social commentary born from the social inequality that was lying underneath the perceived prosperity of Japan in the 1960s, where boxing doubles as a mirror against this (Joe feeling like he can get somewhere by embracing the rules of boxing whereas society remains unfair to Joe even if he conforms better to its rules and customs). Ippo is decidedly not this thoughtful.
Joe by the end has transformed from a brash juvenile delinquent to a quieter, more empathetic and more thoughtful man harboring a lot of guilt and alienation. Ippo's biggest problems are being upset about not winning a fight, and later quitting boxing and being worried about punch-drunk syndrome, both of which are things Joe did too, but with more nuanced context and a less one-note character, and without spending hundreds of chapters at a time teasing and blueballing the audience on the story going anywhere and endlessly repeating the same handful of scenes that never lead anywhere.

If we're looking at the art, just because Ippo's art has more detailed rendering doesn't inherently make it better. Chiba Tetsuya's art is clean, efficient, panels are well-blocked and composed, very readable. Ippo's action is notorious for how unreadable it becomes as the manga goes on; it's hard to believe but it was more than a decade ago that people started meming on the french fries flying around the ring all the time.
And if we're talking about the anime adaptations, bPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

The earliest digital anime were pretty rough, and they had a host of problems including:
>weak colors
>lack of contrast
>often a grey haze over everything.

I consider it a bit of a digital dark ages for anime and it took them years to fix these underlying issues.

Here is a fan edit attempt at correcting this. Stronger colors, contrast, and a CRT effect (film grain replacement).

Could fans produce entire fan edits of series to fix these issues?

Generally OLED or a good mini LED. OLED will have better viewing angles, better motion resolution, and typically less blooming, but top end mini LEDs are roughly on par with the best OLEDs in terms of contrast while getting brighter. The Sony Bravia 9 for example.

>CRTs?

CRTs are incredibly overrated and inflexible when it comes to video. The best HD ones top out 1080i and can be picky with signals. Only PC CRT monitors don't have these issues, but the largest ones are only around 20 inches, and they got prohibitively expensive a long time ago. Most hover around 100-120 nits. Even the best monitors like Sony artisans roughly have a gamut as wide as Rec.709, but with primaries shifted away from red. So, even the best CRTs can't display red as intended. They do have by far the best motion resolution though. You will barely see stutter on a CRT with a proper refresh rate. Their ability to display lower resolutions can also make bad SD anime transfers look a lot better. And, I have to admit that they do have a unique look. Something about phosphors is pleasant, but if you want phosphors you'd be better off hunting down a good Plasma. Something like a late gen Pioneer Kuro or a late Panasonic Plasma. You still get the benefits of phosphors and far superior motion with the benefits of a more modern display.

When I was buying the first volume the cashier asked me if I was buying it for a girlfriend. Sorry lady…this is for me, and me alone. But it is going next to my Sex and the City DVDs.
In any case, I've read up until Volume 8 since then and it's actually pretty wonderful? It might be a soap but its an awfully well written soap, and I just love love love Ai Yazawa's art. If it keeps this quality up it might become one of my favorite manga of all time, I think.
Anyways what does /digi/ think of it

I love Rookies, if it counts (started in 1998).

I really didn't expect to like it as much as I did but Kawato is such an endearing character that I just fell in love with the whole thing. Seeing him go out of his way to do so much for that baseball team even when no one else would and leading all the students to actually want to try in Baseball again was just brilliant.

My favourite part of the manga will always be when in one game he goes up to an opposing pitcher who has been struggling in the game so far, tells him he's doing a fantastic job, then goes to the opposing coach to tell him to stop fucking around. He should take that kid off the mound and give him actual coaching advice so he can grow into a proper player (and adult) instead of this weird humiliation ritual he was forcing him to do to teach him a lesson. Then proceeding to return to his dugout and screaming out loud "AHHHHHH WHY DID I DO THAT I COULD'VE GOT THE TEAM SUSPENDED"

It's truly a one of a kind manga and it saddens me that everything else the mangaka has done is not fully translated yet, even Rokudenshi Blues is taking 20 years to translate and is still around 40 chapters away from being complete.

I recently realized that I love Takahashi Rumiko's style.

I was raving about the new Urusei Yatsura's first OP to my friend, because even without knowing anything about the show you can just TELL how much care and love went into that sequence. I grew up on Inuyasha and I didn't realize until now that they're from the same creator - so now I wanna see what I'm missing out on.

My question to you based oldfrens is, do you think any of the remakes for Ranma or Urusei Yatsura worth watching over the originals?

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but if I'll find anyone who might have watched both, it's here. I want to give them the best chance I can without committing to both old and new versions.

Maybe my favorite part of Touhou is its doujin scene. Bold statement, I know. Yet doujinshi recommendation threads are few and far between, and don't tend to last. So I figured out this was the best place to make a thread for anons to recommend their favorite doujinshi.
Let's keep it SFW for now. Both jp only and translated doujin, but clarify its status if possible.
I am going to start with a rather unknown one: 魔理沙が生理でがんばる本, or "Marisa does her best while on her period". Now, this sounds like a horrible idea, but the author, "am colon tiger", has quite a distinctive style in his stories, and I found the three works I have read of them (this one, the "Another" version of this story, and the "No control on Kirisame's [sexual] appetite"), to be quite enjoyable. Sex is a theme without devolving into NSFW (in fact, it is marked as "for all ages"), which is already quite inusual for a doujinshi, but he even introduces some drama into it… They are soft yuri, btw. And I think it hasn't been translated.

Questions: Do anons want nsfw too?
Should doujin series ("Osanareimu" etc.,) be included?
Anyway, post your.

I am going to recommend a doujin from an extremely well-known author, so that anybody who came here and didn't know about them already can check them out.
The author is karaage tarou, the doujin is "Read me a story, Miss Patchy".
This author's best known work is "Chireide". Which is really good, yeah (that's how I personally got to know both Koishi and Satori). But many of his other stand-alone works are quite memorable too: Jungle Patchy, Sanae Miracle, Super Speed Starters and Keine Box, among others, are quite delicious to read.
Pic related is really one among them, and all of those I've listed I would highly recommend.
karaagetarou has a charming style, both in his drawings (full-color most of the time), and in his stories, a mix of humor and drama that, when done best, is truly heartwarming. Sometimes the humor can be a bit overdone for my taste, and I might have a few doubts in the midst of a doujin, but by the end they are almost always forgotten in the light of true storytelling charm.
Most of them are translated, this one included: https://exhentai.org/g/637831/3b5b4b7069/

Tip: Patchouli's lasers don't hit you if you stand perfectly in center, the laser hitbox vanishes before it visually does. The fire projectiles also have a smaller hitbox on the sides and the way patchy shoots them always leaves big gaps between them, pay more attention to the smaller yellow projectiles there. Lastly, as I always recommend for EoSD, don't be afraid of bombing. The spellcards are RNG when it comes to density and speed due to the leftover PC-98 hidden rank system and some projectiles (especially Sakuya's knives) have a wonky hitbox that can hit you from a longer distance than you think.

Depending on what you watch I can see this. Digital anime has led to a lot of laziness. But at the same time anime that used cels were a lot more limited in what they were able to do in terms of art style. You wouldn't get something like FLCL or Shaft stuff using cels. The digital workflow allows a lot more experimentation and variation in art style because they're not working with physical cels but instead layers on a computer that can be messed with more without any permanent, physical consequences.

There is merit in the idea that limitations breed creativity though.

GGs! Whatever you're doing to improve is clearly working out. Playing better than usual has become the new usual. Congrats on the double digit wincount and thank you for hosting. Very good soku.

Ggs! I'm still not quite on level to challenge you on BO30 distances, but up to BO9 it sure is competitive now.
Also just realized that I've been using my general deck with 2 coins and hangeki all this time instead of full firepower one. I'm starting to get the idea of coin but it's USELESS against Alice and it was awful when 3/5 of my hand was filled with defensive cards I don't use. Deckonomicks is hard…

What makes anime girls with cat ears any better than girls that happen to be cats?

They follow the same archetypes and look adorable. The only difference is that one of them is covered in fur. But, does that really mean anything in the grand scheme of things?

This post also applies to dog girls, by the way.

Does Hellsing Ultimate count? It was released from 2006 to 2012. Or can we only talk about the episodes which were released before 2010?

The art style is very 2000s I'd say it's fine.

The tv show had an aesthetic that the ovas failed to capture imo.
2 things that always bothered me about ultimate were the unnaturally glowing teeth everyone has(sometimes its like they are holding a lightbulb in their mouths) and the plastic looking blood.
Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
