starting a new longform series of threads on here twitter & bluesky, figured I'd bring them here as well to spur discussion.
why? mostly because i haven't actually read the manga since i did a storytime on /a/ back in 2021, and there's a lot to see from rumiko's first.

Ran is great because she's actually involved in Tomobiki, while Benten and Oyuki are like actual "aliens" who pop down and then leave. They're disconnected.

It's effectively a new manga series when they show up, and it's just NOT that interesting. They can't really propell the storyline very well and at most they're just disconnected stories and objects for Mendo and Ataru to gawk at. Ran can start any number of shenanigans - like accidentally poisoning Ataru and Lum thinks he's gonna die so she has to go on an adventure to save him. Or Ran creates some mayhem that gets them all sent to detention. Ran gets taken on a date by Ryunosuke.

Actually Benten's BEST was the anime only ep and the manga chapter where she palled around with Ryunosuke.

Tomobiki students have no idea that Ran is a psycho-bitch and she keeps up a pretty face in public. She is supposed to be psychologically damaged and holds a grudge against Lum, rather than being actually evil. So she's mostly normal, but then goes on her murder plans when Lum and Ataru are involved. So for them they're just attracted to her cutesy persona.

Ryu-chan also only sees the cutesy side. I don't think Ran and Ryu were ever in an adventure together with the gang, it was always one or the other.

Did they cut the ep short so they could avoid Ran's lesbian kiss shenanigans? It's almost never used in the manga, but she has a soul drain kiss ability.


 

Can we talk about how hot Ryūnosuke is? She puts the rest of the cast to Shame. Only Sakura is competition.

If Jason Vorhees taught us never to hitchike, what did we ever learn from Urusei Yatsura?

The borderline Buddhist messaging is pretty clear when you realize Ataru's attachment to women is the source of the problem, not to mention Ran's obsessive rivalry with Lum and the way the Shinto master Cherry is obviously a fraud. Its like an absurd counterpart to Sex and Zen minus the graphic love scenes and Amy Yip's huge tits (although Lum doesn't exactly disappoint in that area). Chasing after girls skirts leads to karmic retribution in the form of forced marriage to an alien princess. But is the show encouraging me to seek carnel relations with alien women or dissuade me? I can't tell. Is it about the futility of sex? Is Ataru the boy Sisyphus doomed to be forever cockblocked?
