Maybe Mendou represents America with its over the top imperial vision and Ataru is Japan, with Imperial Japan's simultaneous lust and disregard for the rest of Asia? The body of Lum, like Christ, is a symbol, albeit for Asia. Shinobu can be Russia. It suits her personality, colder than Siberian winter. A political allegory. A schizophrenic episode.
