I can see a nice story setup where Shinobu keeps cancelling on them, so Ataru and Mendo get suspicious and start stalking her. They then misinterpret what they see, thinking something much more sinister is going on, the boys paranoia reaches a fever pitch, and they strike out to save Shinobu from the clutches of evil, then after hijinks, it turns out she's dating some random and nothing sinister.
Literally anything better than god damn Inaba. I don't think that tool ever once stood up for himself and let Shinobu walk all over him. Ataru and Mendo would have both called out her bullshit.
